CCYA - 2020
Location: Cobb County, Georgia, USA
In Cobb County, the Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA) provides a transformative haven for at-risk homeless youth who have faced abandonment, abuse, neglect, or exploitation, offering safe housing and comprehensive support across three residential programs: Open Gate, Rise Up Academy, and Life Works. The challenges of remote learning during COVID, which extended through November 1st, compounded the struggles of these youth, particularly the 22 high school and college-bound students in Life Works, who lacked adequate study spaces and technology. The emotional toll of navigating academic challenges without proper resources can erode confidence and hope. An $8,561 grant from Ten Thousand Reasons, applied for by Lexi Kantor, empowered CCYA to expand a prior 2017 TTR-funded project, equipping students with critical tools and spaces to succeed academically. This grant enabled CCYA to provide:
Twelve additional Chromebooks and three printers, enhancing access to technology for remote learning and academic tasks.
A dedicated Life Works study center with desks, chairs, couches, and bookshelves, creating a supportive environment for 22 youth to focus on homework and GED preparation.
Funding for GED testing fees and senior fees, plus a student lounge with snacks and couches, fostering a sense of community and boosting morale for academic success.
Thank you, Lexi Kantor, for your passionate advocacy and commitment to empowering CCYA’s youth to overcome challenges and thrive through education and support!
